The Woods – Līgo Haībun Challenge

AnElephantCant speak for all animals
He would like to but he honestly can’t
We may not be quite human
But we do adore women
Or is it just this Haibun and this Elephant?

 The Woods

He hurries back through the woods, carefully avoiding the place where the snakes live.
He would fight them for her, of course, just not today.
His mouth is sore and bleeding, but his chest swells with pride.
This will show how much he loves her.

She is still in the garden.
He bounds across, tail wagging furiously, and deposits his trophy at her feet.
She turns, laughing, happy to see him, her hand reaching behind his ear.
Her smile turns to concern and she opens his mouth, speaking softly as always.
She wets a cloth in the watering can and gently dabs away the blood.

He has no way of knowing that she is young and beautiful, just that she is tender and sweet and caring to everyone, especially the children, but even the man!

But he is impatient now, not feeling the pain, and he motions with his head towards the spiky ball at their feet.

The hedgehog slowly uncurls itself and, with a disdainful look in his direction, saunters off towards the hedge.

There is laughter in her voice as she throws her arms around his shaggy neck and says the words he craves most.
Clever boy!

love has a purity
by any other emotion

She looked at the trophy before her
As the hero at her feet knelt
Clever boy oh how I thank you
For him her heart soon did melt

Then her eyes gazed up a tree trunk
And espied where a snake dwelt
    ATTACK she commanded her champion
For it will make me a very fine belt

Poignant, well-told, lots of emotion, at least for me being an animal lover. Very sweet. I love your blog title, too and the poem you write before every post. So unique and creative!

One word, my friend. Essentiality. Your prose, excellent and the closing haiku, contributing the defining emotion (essence) of your written words. Yes, the quality of Essentiality fits your Haibun perfectly! 🙂 xo

What a brilliantly written piece. I enjoyed reading this. The love of the dog to the woman and the woman to the dog. Love it 🙂

The unselfish love between animal and human comes out very well here. Yes, he doesn’t care how she looks and neither does she.. That’s what makes it so pure. a lovely haibun
