Under the Bridge

The last time I saw her was in what we called ‘our tunnel’.
It was hidden under the road bridge where the river runs into the sea.
We used to sneak down here after school, just the two of us, and I’d try to be romantic, and read poetry I wrote for her.
She’d bring her guitar and sing to me.
She stopped coming so often when she started hanging out with that older crowd.
They weren’t nice people.
I’d still come and sit for a while, hoping she’d appear.
And one day, she did.
She floated by, face down.

About ceayr

A Scot who has discovered peace in a small town he calls Medville on the Côte Vermeille, C.E. Ayr has spent a large part of his life in the West of Scotland and a large part elsewhere. His first job was selling programmes at his local football club and he has since tried 73 other career paths, the longest being in IT, with varying degrees of success. He is somewhat nomadic, fairly irresponsible and, according to his darling daughter, a bit random. So, nobody’s perfect.

Moving to an older crowd always portends darkness. Excellent writing, CE.

  2. Can you gut punch, or what?

  3. Nice one, back on your murdeous form again, C E. I wonder where your body count stands now!

Ouch! Excellent sucker punch ending, if not for the love-struck hero and his beloved.
A whole adolescence here, right from naive innocence through to cruel consequences.

  5. James Pyles's avatar James Pyles says:

Nice gruesome twist at the end.
