Friday Fictioneers is a weekly challenge set by Rochelle Wisoff Fields to write a 100-word story in response to a photo prompt. You can find other stories here.
My apologies for the complete irrelevance of my story to your splendid photo, m’lady.
I’m pressed for time, but had already written this in the clearly forlorn hope that it might somehow fit.
But at least my intro and outro are cool. And relevant.

Homage to Catalonia
Sometimes I ponder the meaning of life.
I’m in an aeroplane which has been driving around northern Spain, or Catalonia as the locals call it, for about 90 minutes.
I’m reminded of pigeons, who often scurry on foot away from perceived danger, seemingly forgetting that they have the gift of flight.
I should, in a perfect world, be high over France by now, en route – gasp, horror! – to Englandshire, to undertake missionary work.
Well, someone has to civilise the Sassenachs, today it’s my turn.
So, is this delay due to some higher power who actually likes them as they are?

Sassenach. Wonderful word!
I do my best reflecting in transport where I end up someplace else from the point I was heading for. I guess it’s all good in the end.
I suspect you’re right, CE. Leave ’em be!
And I was expecting to listen to George Orwell…
Finding the solution to the meaning of life, is certainly a hard mission in civilising Sassenachs.
at least, the delay has given him some time for reflection.
Love this vignette your pigeon imagery is brilliant and I’m so proud of your missionary work in England – very brave 😄
C.E. I like how the MC questions the gods at the end. When Gods speak, woe betide those who don’t listen.
I like the way your writing reads like the task is most noble whilst truly it is rather an academic exercise for the character.
In looking up the history, I also found this:
“Adopted as the name for The Sassenach blended Scotch whisky, launched by actor Sam Heughan.”
Hah.
Dear C.E.
Never apologize when it comes to the photo. As long as you post the photo, it’s all good. 😉 Nicely done. Of course I had to go back and read about granny’s pigeons.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Leave them to their blood sacrifices and pagan rites
