cicadas

calanque by c e ayr

Click here to hear the poet read his words:

cicadas

cliffs
steep and rocky
enclose
a crescent of sand
kissed
by murmuring waters
of sinuous
sun-sparkled sea
a cloudless blue
Mediterranean sky
lazes
over the beach
hushed
by the soft
but constant sound
of breaking waves
white flecked couriers
sand swishing
pebbles trickling
rocks rumbling
and yet
cicadas
on olive and pine trees
still are heard
singing
their subtle song
while
beyond the reefs
mermaids frolic
in silvery surf
