The Ripple – Haibun Thinking

AnElephantCant walk on water
Although he does cut quite a dash
But what do you think
Does he really sink
Or does he simply create the most mammoth splash

AnElephant makes another indefatigable assault on this great weekly challenge hosted by his friend Al, who is still achieving wondrous things with this site.
Please take a moment to check out this page to see some superb interpretations of the Japanese Haibun, a literary form which explores the relationship between the human experience and nature.
This week AnElephant chooses as his inspiration this image:

The Ripple

I sit at the end of the jetty, watching the Mediterranean break over the rocks at my feet.
It is mid-November and still mild.
This is why I am here.
I should be at peace.
But my heart is restless.
I stand and stretch.
On impulse I lift a stone and hurl it high into the sky.
I watch its arced descent into the waves, see the ripples spread and disappear.
And I know why I am troubled.
I am reminded of an impulsive action many years ago which also created a disturbance.
The effects of that are still rippling through my life.
And will continue until I die.

nature teaches us
that no single action
exists in isolation

About ceayr

A Scot who has discovered peace in a small town he calls Medville on the Côte Vermeille, C.E. Ayr has spent a large part of his life in the West of Scotland and a large part elsewhere. His first job was selling programmes at his local football club and he has since tried 73 other career paths, the longest being in IT, with varying degrees of success. He is somewhat nomadic, fairly irresponsible and, according to his darling daughter, a bit random. So, nobody’s perfect.

Yes, what emmy said, ditto! Beautifully done, the haibun and the haiku! A haibun in the true meaning of the word! 🙂 xo

So much contained in so few words.
The richness, complexity and puzzlement of life is drawn so limpidly that I feel the meditative mood of the stone thrower and share the moment’s conclusion.
    Beautifully done.
