Hill Town

The little town has a rather bloody history.
It sits high in the Massif des Maures, and its fort was the site of the last stand of the Moors in 973 AD.
They were all slaughtered.
The views from here are breathtaking.
To the south-east lies the Mediterranean Sea, with St Tropez , some 15 kilometres away, visible through a gap in the hills.
Far to the north tower the snow-capped Alps.
To the north-west, I am amazed to see, maybe 100 kilometres distant, the landmark mountain of Sainte-Victoire, so beloved of Cezanne and Picasso.
My new bride, clinging happily to my arm, points excitedly to something much closer.
‘What’s that,’ she asks, indicating a small body of water maybe 10 kilometres away.
It’s in a hollow, and surrounded on three sides by parasol pine trees.
‘Looks like a wee loch,’ I say.
‘I didn’t know that was there,’ she says. ‘Did you?’
‘No,’ I smile at her, ‘but I haven’t spent as much time in this area as you have, my love.’
I don’t like lying to her – well, actually that’s not true, I love it, it’s who I am.
The truth is that I remember all too clearly my last visit there.
It was just a few years ago, when my second well-insured wife sadly drowned.
Still smiling, I kiss her hair before asking the question.
‘Would you like to go see it, maybe have a quick swim?’

About ceayr

A Scot who has discovered peace in a small town he calls Medville on the Côte Vermeille, C.E. Ayr has spent a large part of his life in the West of Scotland and a large part elsewhere. His first job was selling programmes at his local football club and he has since tried 73 other career paths, the longest being in IT, with varying degrees of success. He is somewhat nomadic, fairly irresponsible and, according to his darling daughter, a bit random. So, nobody’s perfect.

  1. So your MC drowns his wives while my MC tosses his off cliffs. Your guy isn’t named Nigel, is he?

Bloody well-done in true ceayr fashion.

Beloved song, and not just by Scots! Killer voice on that lad.

  2. Beautiful introductory music to open your narration. I liked the sudden macabre ending – really creepy.

Well, I suppose that’s one way to make a living. 😏
You did warn us – ‘The little town has a rather bloody history.’
But surely nothing horrible can happen after such beautiful descriptions?
Cue a charmingly evil MC to show us exactly how.
    Another wee gem.
    And the music – perfect.
