The Unicorn Challenge.
A magical new weekly writing opportunity from her – Jenne Gray – and me.
Visit her blog every Friday to see the photo prompt, and post your amazing story in her comments section.
Or on your own blog, and stick the link down in her comments.
The rules are:
Maximum of 250 words.
Based on photo prompt.
That’s it.

A Failure to Communicate
Bollocks.
I beg your pardon?
Bollocks.
Is there a reason for this latest outburst of vulgarity?
That’s not vulgar, it’s what they’re called.
What?
The thing in the photo. Bollocks.
Bollard.
What?
It’s a bollard.
Oh, right… So what’s bollocks then?
Oh jings. Hee-haws.
What? Like donkeys?
{Sigh} No, not really. Goolies.
What? Ghosties?
Good grief, no. Dangly bits.
Like Xmas decorations and stuff?
Nnnhh. Men’s dangly bits.
Oh, right, you mean tentacles?
Oh dear lord, we need to end this conversation before one of us dies.
On second thoughts, y’know, it looks a bit like a porn.
What?
A porn. You know, like a porn-shop.
Ah, a pawn. Yes, it does a bit.
Porn, pawn, what’s the difference?
Well, a pawnshop is where a guy gives you money for something you own then charges you much more to get it back again. And a pornshop is very different.
In what way?
I’m not telling you.
Why not? Go on…
It sells naughty things.
Oh cool! Tell me more!
No. It’s not suitable for you.
Why not? I’m an adult.
With a mental age of about twelve. You’ll snigger.
I won’t, honestly.
They sell sex stuff.
{Snigger} You said sex.
And you sniggered. This conversation is finished.
What do you mean sex stuff?
Finished. Over. Ended. Done with.
Come on, you can tell me.
I could, but I won’t. Go away.
Is it sex stuff like in the photo?
What?
Bollocks!

Oh. My. Word. This is SO funny. One of your best.
Thanks, Sally, you’ve got me all smiles now!
Absolutely brilliant, a chuckle a line! At least I know what it is unlike that dickhead!
That’s what it is, my dear Keith!
Gotta say, Keef, I’m glad you’re here this week, at least one person who gets out of their house/car/dreamworld and recognises an everyday object!
And thank you, it’s one of those that I really enjoyed writing too!
Mama mia! È un fottuto vibratore…..dell’Antica Roma!
Very funny, CE!
Never do I read anyone’s stories until Saturday but I needed a bit of insight as to what this thing is; your delightful story did not help at all, but it did make me laugh.
See y’all domani!
Ah Nancy, dear sweet Nancy, if you don’t know what something is, then write a story about that!
We don’t really care what you’re story’s about, we just want to read your delightful words based on what you thought when you saw the prompt photo.
With a minimum of swearie words, of course!
Glad you had a wee laugh.
Sì, che è esattamente quello che è successo!
Here’s mine!

Oh, I didn’t mean to post that here!
Consistency, they say, is the last resort of the unimaginative.

thanks, c.
my propensity for researching prompt-photos (aka ‘jeez! I gots nothin’! Please Intenet Muse a hint at what it is… the better to obfuscate a lack of sensible story-telling)
now, of course, (thanks to V. for the encouragement to ….err be creative) now, the question is whether to go with first impulse or draw on my ocean-going days… decisions…decisions
Ooh, hello, sailor!
And why fret, skipper, we’re not looking for a description of the photo, just your first (printable) impression.
Which you didn’t share, to our collective dismay.
Very funny. I’m very aware of lack of communication.
It can be a two-way street, I find
I have to admit that was my first thought too! I can only hope I can unsee that and come up with something a little more, shall we say adult? No let’s not! Great post!
I tend to think that sometimes ‘adult’ is overrated, Violet!
Thanks for kind words.
My neighbour has just been to the door to see if I’m OK.
Said I sounded like a donkey suffocating!|
Pity he doesn’t speak English, or I could have shared the joke.
Fabulous piece of word play between two great voices – I can just see the pair of them.
Would it be presumptuous of me to offer you a ‘chapeau’?
Not an easy one to translate, Jenne!
Happy you enjoyed.
