Out of Reach
The first time I saw her she was with Jason.
It was jammin’ night at the pub.
She was glorious, and played a bit of piano.
He looked like Brad, played guitar like Eric, and basked in her adoration.
Everything he had was, for me, out of reach.
I gave up my own feeble strumming, but went every week just to worship her from across the room.
Then, after almost a year, he came in with a younger, blonder beauty.
I hated him, expected never to see her again.
She appeared later, and played piano, smiling bravely.
So at last I approached her and spoke to her.
She smiled at me, my bones turned to jelly, and I collapsed quivering on the floor.
Nah, not really, it just felt that way.
I persevered, we dated, and eventually married.
Sometimes I’d watch her, unobserved, as she gazed wistfully at nothing, and I knew that, deep inside, part of her was still, for me, out of reach.
One day we were walking in the park, our son, 5, on his little scooter just ahead, our daughter, 3, holding each of our hands, swinging between us.
I saw her regard them both in turn with such love that my heart almost broke.
Then her eyes came to mine, and she smiled, my bones turned to jelly, and I collapsed quivering on the floor.
Nah, not really, but at that moment the world did change.
She was never again, for me, out of reach.

Dude!
(must be the holiday season, no?)
very nicely told
Damn, dude, lol*
(We’ll tak a right gude‐willie waught…)
Very nicely commented!
What a lovely story! Is this really the same ceayr who locks people in dungeons? Locked in someone’s heart is so much sweeter.
Let’s not get too carried away, Sally.
It’s weeks since I locked anyone in a dungeon, so maybe she’ll end up there yet!
Would you please leave a link to a recipe for the Bone Jelly?
Behave yourself, wummin!
That’s a delightful love story with a most satisfying twist.
The self-deprecating tone of the young lover turned to quiet triumph.
A slice of life.
Still smiling.
Well, y’know, I like to keep my readers guessing!
