The Car

I stop, confused, when I see her car.
Not here, I think. And certainly not now. Did he understand nothing?
As I approach it, somewhat warily, I admit, another thought dawns on me.
I’m in Scotland, not home in France, so that’s the passenger-side door lying open.
That makes even less sense.
My phone beeps.
I fumble it out of a pocket, glance at the screen.
How could you?
A shiver runs through me.
She knows.
Beep.
How could you think that of me?
Unexplained absences, no explanations, too many secrets.
What else could I think?
The car is empty.
I look around at the fields, hedgerows and trees I know so well.
The undulating topography reminds me of my childhood, when I used to walk here often.
I still do when I come home.
But not when I need an alibi.
Beep.
He couldn’t do it. Says I’m too beautiful.
I curse aloud.
I paid him plenty for this one simple task.
Beep.
You used to think so too.
I still do, I just couldn’t face the heartache, the humiliation, of her leaving for someone else.
I can still fix this, I can forgive her, start over.
Beep.
Surprise family gathering. Your brothers, sister, son and daughter.
What an idiot!
I need to call her now, beg forgiveness.
Beep.
I’m sorry.
My hands are shaking as my fingers slide awkwardly over the screen, stumble over the menus.
Beep.
Don’t look round.

  1. If your tale had an ending I suspect, given your murderous tendencies, it would not be a happy one – but then again, you do like to surprise us! Nice one, nonetheless.

Just stop us on the brink, why don’t you?
Suspense, revenge, misunderstood love – and possible murder, all in 250 words – first-class.
(A most effective device, the use of the series of text messages.)

Well, did she or didn’t she?
    No, I didn’t think you’d say…
