Eye of Beholder
Okay, I know I’m no oil painting, but at least I try to look after myself, watch my weight, stay reasonably fit, maintain a high standard of personal hygiene, and dress well.
And sometimes in life there comes a moment when you just have to gamble, and go for it.
That’s how I felt when I first met her.
I’d never seen anyone like her before, and nor have I since.
I could tell you she is beautiful, but that’s a totally inadequate word.
Radiant, gorgeous, even goddess, these are all just clichés that don’t come close to describing her.
Whenever my eyes alight on her, my life changes.
I say ‘changes’, but in fact she totally transforms my universe.
My pulse races, my heart pumps wildly, my very soul is inflamed every time she draws near.
She brightens even this hellhole, this abomination, this pathetic apology for a world.
As for other women, pah!
They all pale into insignificance.
And, although she is perhaps not exactly overwhelmed by my approach, her beauty, her purity, her innate goodness still shine from within.
She smiles at me as though I’m an equal, treats me with far more kindness, even courtesy, than I can ever deserve.
I’m utterly enchanted.
And, let me say, not just by the warts, the green gungy stuff and the suppurating boils.

You almost had me with your words of loving, and then came the final twist!
Proof positive that love is blind! Ha!
Each to his/her own, Liz, that’s what makes the world go round!
As happy endings go that was a little different! You make a lovely couple, though.
Some say I’m no oil painting myself, Keith!
Well, I wasn’t expecting that.
Excellent!
Nobody expects…
Oh no, that was somebody else!
This is probably one of the weirdest prompts so far on TUC!
I think the tales this week will be equally bizarre.
Now that’s a proper twist, CE, and you made me laugh.
I think Jenne likes to force us out of our comfort zones occasionally, and I’m all for that.
Laughing is good.
Always the twist — yes, I laughed!
That was kinda the point, Sally!
A nose by another name would smell as…
fun sharp-angle close (the ending of the story)
My dog hasn’t got a nose.
How does he smell?
Terrible!
I liked how you interpreted the prompt and the twist at the end was fun. And eye-opening. That’s not meant to be a pun, but that your piece is a reminder that there are things of worth underneath the surface.
Happy you enjoyed it, Michael.
And yes, eye of the beholder.
She must be a believer in ‘handsome is as handsome does’. 😉 Aren’t you lucky?
Well, that was an unexpected twist, even by your high standards.
And after such an ecstatic build-up too.
Still laughing.
Brilliant.
Clue was in the title, Jenne!
