The Flood

It’s been raining non-stop for almost six weeks now.
The valleys and fields are long flooded, but still we frolic on the hilltops.
We don’t care about getting wet, and we have to run free.
Even more than the great cats, the dancing gazelles, the mighty buffalo, we treasure our liberty.
Almost every other creature has succumbed to his promises, but we don’t believe him.
We see the messages left in the stones as they search everywhere.
But we’ll never be caged in a boat, no matter what Noah says.
We are different.
We are special.
We are unicorns.

About ceayr

A Scot who has discovered peace in a small town he calls Medville on the Côte Vermeille, C.E. Ayr has spent a large part of his life in the West of Scotland and a large part elsewhere. His first job was selling programmes at his local football club and he has since tried 73 other career paths, the longest being in IT, with varying degrees of success. He is somewhat nomadic, fairly irresponsible and, according to his darling daughter, a bit random. So, nobody’s perfect.

So that’s what happened. They should have listened. 🙁

  4. Great take on the prompt. “We are unicorns.” I love that line.

Frollick until the world transforms. Great art work, too.

      Even Unicorns aren’t perfect, Charli!
Thanks for mentioning Phil’s art, I think it adds so much to my wee tales.

  6. Well, C.E., that was a lovely sprinkling of fairy dust.
Now, I seem to recall some nonsense warning you gave me about being the funny one on your page. I hate to tell you, dear heart, but you can’t keep a Sicilian Storyteller stifled:

    Excellent retelling of the Noah’story.
I’ll bet Noah’s irritated by the unicorns, but I’ll also bet that they’d be God’s favourite animal, always supposing…
And a brilliant merging of Phil’s images – plus the unicorn, of course.

Fun fact: pouring rain here for the last 3 days, indoors creating educational materials with great cats roaming free and just taught my students that the root uni means unique… go figure! A great short story that almost felt like it was written for me?!

Sorry, Kate, your comments keep going astray just now, so I didn’t see this until now.
And yes, unicorn means one horn, and it’s our National Animal as you probably know.
If you ever want a story written just for you, you only have to ask!
      Always a pleasure, Kate.

The Irish Rovers had the last words — or was it the final notes? — about these now mythical beauties! 😭
