of all the girls

Click here to hear the poet read his words:

of all the girls

of all the girls in all the world
I have spent my life with you
some times were good
a few were bad
but that
I think
is to be expected

the years have passed
and surely now
you should feel secure at last
but still you gaze at me
with the same question
on your lips and mind

you ask me why
of all the girls in all the world
I spent my life with you

I smile
and think
you should have guessed

of all the girls in all the world
you were the one who answered
yes

About ceayr

A Scot who has discovered peace in a small town he calls Medville on the Côte Vermeille, C.E. Ayr has spent a large part of his life in the West of Scotland and a large part elsewhere. His first job was selling programmes at his local football club and he has since tried 73 other career paths, the longest being in IT, with varying degrees of success. He is somewhat nomadic, fairly irresponsible and, according to his darling daughter, a bit random. So, nobody’s perfect.

Oh, this one gives pause for thought. I read it once and understood one thing. Then I read it later and understood something else. Isn’t that what good poems are like? And it’s a good poem. I like it.
