Garden Party
I like garden parties.
Mainly because no one ever feels the need to have security at them.
I mean, if a ‘do’ is at a restaurant or club, there’d be big dudes at the door, checking invitations, keeping the scruff out.
Keeping people like me out.
But, for some reason, not outdoors in glorious sunshine.
Obviously nothing sinister ever happens in broad daylight, does it?
So, this one is to celebrate an engagement.
A few well-dressed, affluent-looking, older folk stand around sipping champagne and beaming with self-satisfaction.
The young people, meanwhile, are more exuberant, laughing and dancing, and knocking back the beer and shots.
Cathy looks delightful, pretty in her short summer dress, full of happy energy.
I don’t know what she sees in Mark, but I suppose he does have money.
He really is a bit of a numpty, not too bright, but with a well-paid job in daddy’s company, of course.
Who else would hire him?
I don’t mix with the others.
I probably wouldn’t be made welcome, I’m not one of the crowd.
So, when I slip through the gate, I stay in the gloom of the high, well-trimmed hedge.
Cathy hasn’t seen me yet, which is good.
I don’t want to spoil the surprise.
Because, when she does, she will have questions.
Who are you?
What are you doing here?
What is that you’re carrying?
So for now I hang back, invisible in the shadows.
I’m a patient guy.
I know my moment will come.

Uffda but this is creepy. I don’t think this is what Ricky Nelson had in mind when he sang this, but it’ll do CE. It’ll do! 😉
I like ‘Uffda’, which I guess is Murcan for ‘Jings’, yeah?
Maybe not exactly what Rick meant, but he was having a bit of a moan.
I’ll happily settle for ‘It’ll do’!
Oh yah. You betcha! 😉😆
So who is this man, this outsider?
We see the others clearly through his eyes.
Hints of dark, but light too, around Cathy.
And he certainly doesn’t think much of Mark.
I like mysteries that tantaise – they’re very satisfying.
Especially in a story that is complete without a solution.
I like ‘complete without a solution’.
And you know I like to make my readers (both of you!) think.
Glad you enjoyed.
