I didn’t die

Click here to hear the poet read his words:

I didn’t die

I didn’t die
the day you left
that was the first
and biggest surprise
I didn’t see
how I could go on
without the warmth of your smile
and the sunshine
from your eyes

I don’t call
you told me not to
and I only send a message
when I find a credible excuse
sometimes
but not often
you reply
from a cool distance
busy at work
you say
or
getting warmer now

I know now I won’t ever
get over this
I’m not even sure
I’ll get through it
but at least
I didn’t die
the day you left

I just stopped living

About ceayr

A Scot who has discovered peace in a small town he calls Medville on the Côte Vermeille, C.E. Ayr has spent a large part of his life in the West of Scotland and a large part elsewhere. His first job was selling programmes at his local football club and he has since tried 73 other career paths, the longest being in IT, with varying degrees of success. He is somewhat nomadic, fairly irresponsible and, according to his darling daughter, a bit random. So, nobody’s perfect.

It’s sadly true about this stop living thing when living with grief and loss. A very touching poem!

You have the gift of quietly expressing universal truths in beautiful, and heart-breaking, language.
    Powerful poem.
