My mother, who must have ears like a hawk, intercepts us as I hustle Carole Kay towards the stairs leading to my room.
Carole is a pretty girl, popular with all the lads, very easy-going and rumoured to be, in private, even a tad rambunctious.
And where, asks my mum, with a surprising lack of insight, do you think you are going?
I er um we em thought erm ah going to listen to some music! I answer smoothly.
Well, says mater, seemingly determined that I should remain innocent until I am at least 30, I don’t want anything, ahem, bad going on up there.
Oh no, Mrs Ayr, you don’t need to worry about that, says Carole, with the most beatific smile, dragging me by the hand up the first few steps, I promise you I’ll be very, very good.

I’ve never heard the word before in my life, and don’t know what it means.
I think it’s probably a made-up American word, possibly a brutal misspelling of ‘rumbustious’!
