Friday Fictioneers is hosted by the wonderful Rochelle, the undisputed master of what I call Sound Bite Fiction.
She sets the weekly challenge, the standard, and the prompt photo.
The idea, as always, is to write a story of around 100 words based on the picture below, which this week is supplied by J Hardy Carroll.
No reading this week, as I am currently on a train, heading towards darkest Englandshire.
Fairies
Children know we exist.
Adults, not so much.
I don’t know when the belief evaporates.
But it is probably a good thing.
Children are fun.
Adults, once again, not so much.
Children laugh when they see us, and join in our games.
They hear our songs, and dance with us in our magic circles.
They give us sweets, cakes, and biscuits.
But our diets are much broader than that, of course.
We need protein, carbohydrates and vitamins just like you.
We are, in fact, omnivores.
What do you think happens to all those missing cats?

Missing cats issue – solved. I wonder if they like hot dogs?
Nah, healthy diet, no junk food!
Me, I see fairies and love playing with them.
Ronda
And share their meals, Ronda?
That last line absolutely made me laugh out loud! The cat-eating fairies, brilliant.
I am smiling happily here!
Thank you, Siobhan
Ooh noo! They should eat the adults instead.
Laughing.
Human lives matter, Ali!
Poor cats. What a kicker! So much for the sweet fairy image. Fun little tale.
Glad you enjoyed, Tannille!
Gah! Not a cat-lover, but that last line took me by surprise 🙂
Happy trails to you in darkest Englandshire.
Gah! is good!
Always happy to visit special friends
Ha! I love the last line! I’m more of a dog person. I hope you have an enjoyable trip and stay safe.
Thanks, Brenda, glad you enjoyed.
Back to Scotland tomorrow (Tuesday) then home to France Friday.
Eating cats aside, I love how you wrote to the exact image size of the photo – now I too can see the magical fairies floating by. Genius!
Comment of the week!
Thank you
Oh dear – at least it’s not children they eat!
As if I’d do something like that, Liz
No thanks for spoiling it for me about fairies. 🙂 I believe all of it until the end part 😀
You are always free to have your own belief system, JJ, but this is a true story!
Cats and fairies and a clever twist! Well done. Enjoy your trip 🙂
Glad you had fun, Sue.
Thank you.
Most real fairy tales and folklore have fairies as dangerous, vicious things, and I think your story captures that well.
Thanks, Josh, Tinkerbell was a wee terror in real life!
That took a turn. I should have been expecting it, but you got me. Now, I have another reason to not like fairies. It used to just be the dust. As much time as I spend dusting, I think my house is full of fairies.
Laughing.
Fairies are cool, what’s a bit of dust when they’ve cleared out the cats!
Cat eating fairy would be useful around here, the amount of s*** I have to clear from my garden! Brilliantly excecuted
Exactly!
They have no respect for others’ property
Oh lawdy, what a turn this story takes. From sweet and charming to cat allergies. Well done, CE.
Cheers, Bill, lil dudes gotta eat too
I once had a cat that ate fairies.
Now that is just nasty.
I am sulking now.
kids mustn’t be laughing anymore when they find out what happens to their cats. 🙂
Ah, they never know, Plaridel, no one reads my blog!
Well I didn’t see that coming! Poor kitties. But children no doubt are more forgiving of the dark side of fairies. 😉
Eating a few cats is not so dark, Dora!
😼
I love where you took this! Just the other day I was thinking of the Cottingley fairy hoax of 1917.
Ol’ ACD was a strange dude, wanted to believe all this stuff.
Thanks, Alicia
That’s catastrophic!
Groan…
Not cats! I was enjoying that until that line.
Laughing.
Always happy to upset a friend!
Dear CE,
It was a sweet story until the final dietary comments. 😉 Good one.
Shalom,
Rochelle
All about a balanced diet, m’lady!
Coincidentally our neighbours cat has gone missing in the last couple of days, just as you are leaving Scotland and have written this story. I don’t believe in coincidence. Hope you make it through Englandshire safely.
Mmm, moggie taste good…
Now I know, poor cats. 🙂
Reduces my allergies…
Children too make a tasty snack
I was thinking the same thing.
I don’t expect any better from a wild Scot, but I am so disappointed in you, Alicia.
C’mon, Neil, we’re not savages!
