Fairies – Friday Fictioneers

Friday Fictioneers is hosted by the wonderful Rochelle, the undisputed master of what I call Sound Bite Fiction.
She sets the weekly challenge, the standard, and the prompt photo.
The idea, as always, is to write a story of around 100 words based on the picture below, which this week is supplied by J Hardy Carroll.

No reading this week, as I am currently on a train, heading towards darkest Englandshire.

Fairies

Children know we exist.
Adults, not so much.
I don’t know when the belief evaporates.
But it is probably a good thing.
Children are fun.
Adults, once again, not so much.
Children laugh when they see us, and join in our games.
They hear our songs, and dance with us in our magic circles.
They give us sweets, cakes, and biscuits.
But our diets are much broader than that, of course.
We need protein, carbohydrates and vitamins just like you.
We are, in fact, omnivores.
What do you think happens to all those missing cats?

About ceayr

A Scot who has discovered peace in a small town he calls Medville on the Côte Vermeille, C.E. Ayr has spent a large part of his life in the West of Scotland and a large part elsewhere. His first job was selling programmes at his local football club and he has since tried 73 other career paths, the longest being in IT, with varying degrees of success. He is somewhat nomadic, fairly irresponsible and, according to his darling daughter, a bit random. So, nobody’s perfect.

That last line absolutely made me laugh out loud! The cat-eating fairies, brilliant.

  4. draliman's avatar draliman says:

Ooh noo! They should eat the adults instead.

  5. Tannille's avatar Tannille says:

Poor cats. What a kicker! So much for the sweet fairy image. Fun little tale.

Gah! Not a cat-lover, but that last line took me by surprise 🙂

Happy trails to you in darkest Englandshire.

  7. Ha! I love the last line! I’m more of a dog person. I hope you have an enjoyable trip and stay safe.

Eating cats aside, I love how you wrote to the exact image size of the photo – now I too can see the magical fairies floating by. Genius!

  9. Liz Young's avatar Liz Young says:

Oh dear – at least it’s not children they eat!

  10. No thanks for spoiling it for me about fairies. 🙂 I believe all of it until the end part 😀

  11. Sue's avatar Sue says:

Cats and fairies and a clever twist! Well done. Enjoy your trip 🙂

  12. Most real fairy tales and folklore have fairies as dangerous, vicious things, and I think your story captures that well.

  13. Nobbinmaug's avatar Nobbinmaug says:

That took a turn. I should have been expecting it, but you got me. Now, I have another reason to not like fairies. It used to just be the dust. As much time as I spend dusting, I think my house is full of fairies.

  14. Cat eating fairy would be useful around here, the amount of s*** I have to clear from my garden! Brilliantly excecuted

  15. Bill's avatar Bill says:

Oh lawdy, what a turn this story takes. From sweet and charming to cat allergies. Well done, CE.

  18. Dora's avatar Dora says:

Well I didn’t see that coming! Poor kitties. But children no doubt are more forgiving of the dark side of fairies. 😉

  19. I love where you took this! Just the other day I was thinking of the Cottingley fairy hoax of 1917.

  20. That’s catastrophic!

  21. Sandra's avatar Sandra says:

Not cats! I was enjoying that until that line.

  22. Dear CE,

It was a sweet story until the final dietary comments. 😉 Good one.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

Coincidentally our neighbours cat has gone missing in the last couple of days, just as you are leaving Scotland and have written this story. I don’t believe in coincidence. Hope you make it through Englandshire safely.

  24. Mike's avatar Mike says:

Now I know, poor cats. 🙂
