The End – Friday Fictioneers

AnElephantCant worry about inter-planetary invaders
He thinks spacemen and such like are daft
He tries not to be mean
But if they really are green
Then AnElephant is just going to laugh

Once again it is Friday Fictioneer time.
Where our ethereal hostess Rochelle twinkles her light onto a new idea each week and creates a galactic gathering of stunning scribblers of star-spangled stories.
And AnElephant scarily scans the sky as usual.
The idea is to write a very short story, circa 100 words, based on this picture prompt (below).
That’s it.

The End

So that is it?
It looks like it, darling.
The end of the world.
Yes, unstoppable now, apparently.
So where do they come from?
Everyone seems a bit vague about that.
Doesn’t really matter, does it?
No, they just fired these wretched missiles and that is it.
And we can’t stop them?
Apparently not, when they reach our atmosphere they will go boom and release all this radioactive stuff, destroying every living thing on Earth.
And we have about four hours?
Yes.
What would you like to do?
Watch TV?
What’s on?
That Spielberg movie.
The War of the Worlds?

hoping for some popcorn to go along with the movie. 🙂 good story!

  3. glossarch's avatar glossarch says:

That Spielberg movie scared the hell out of me when I saw it. I nineteen and living alone at the time – went to the theater alone (never bothered me to do that), and at the end of the movie, that scene of the clothes falling from the sky stuck with me. I’m not sure if that’s the one I’d pick to while away civilization’s last hours, but to each their own!

  4. Watching tv is a perfect way to pass time as one waits for the world to end, though I’d like a last dinner to go with too 😀 Nicely done, dear Elephant!

  5. Bastet's avatar Bastet says:

Ah…lol! An Elephant has a wonderful imagination…what else to do when the world’s about to end but to watch a Spielberg movie! Now, I’m going out to wwatch the skies a little 😉

  6. storydivamg's avatar storydivamg says:

Well, you might as well watch that, if nothing else is on. I’m sensing a theme of desolation this week.

  7. Ah the challenge of how to pass the time while waiting for the inevitable apocalypse ….
    Well told 🙂

  8. babso2you's avatar babso2you says:

    Good one!

  9. subrotop's avatar subrotop says:

    So no reality TV then?

  10. JackieP's avatar JackieP says:

Well if one must die with the end of the world might as well watch tv. Now me I would read a good book or two. 🙂

  11. lewiscave's avatar lewiscave says:

Ew, war of the worlds. I think I wold welcome the end with Napoleon dynamite, it’s like looking back at my life. Great story!

  12. elmowrites's avatar elmowrites says:

An Elephant really knows how to spend his final hours. I like the light tone in your apocalypse!

  13. DCTdesigns's avatar DCTdesigns says:

I’m with Helena on close encounters. Either way can we have popcorn with our last flick. Not the worst way to go out.

  14. Ha.. that sounds very credible.. watch TV what else… and of course War of the worlds… and cough those aliens in the face

  15. atrm61's avatar atrm61 says:

Not bad-rather apt and then ofc one gets to see the handsome Tom Cruise-so what if there is so much blood and gore and violence-kind of a preparatory four hours(is that movie that long?).Great spin on the prompt An Elephant:-)

  16. Anja's avatar Anja says:

I at least can breathe a sigh of relief that I was spared from being the victim this time 🙂

  17. Let’s go out with a bang.

  18. This is so bizarrely ironic I think it must be true. I’ll bring that new sweet and salty popcorn. It’s to die for…

  19. cshowers's avatar cshowers says:

Very funny. I enjoyed both poems!

    Blessings,
    Cheryl

  20. The funny thing is, I could almost see it: people watching War of the Worlds right before an alien invasion. Nothing like bleak irony right before the end.

  21. Good story with a touch of dark humor. I wonder if they’re in New York City, Washington, DC or LA. Those places seem to suffer frequently from catastrophes.

  22. Jan Brown's avatar Jan Brown says:

Good one! Can I come over? I’ll bring the popcorn. We can have real butter on it this time, no worries….

  23. cindy knoke's avatar cindy knoke says:

Love these, the first especially! Kudos~

  24. helenmidgley's avatar helenmidgley says:

    Hee hee, great job 🙂

  25. sandraconner's avatar sandraconner says:

A cut take on this, Elephant. I like the format too.

  26. Sandra's avatar Sandra says:

I’d rather sit and talk. Nice take.

  27. Dee's avatar Dee says:

    Now, what would I do?

  28. Hala J.'s avatar Hala J. says:

Hey, if everyone wanted to do amazing things in their final moments, it wouldn’t leave room for everyone. What’s wrong with sitting down for a little apocalyptic TV? Ain’t nothin’ wrong, that’s what. (Though they could have picked a better movie, eh?)

  29. Ha! Now I actually want to watch Close Encounters (the much better Spielberg film)

  30. Adam Ickes's avatar Adam Ickes says:

Seems like a waste to go out watching tv.

  31. Interesting thought…what would I do with my last four hours??

    janet

  32. Dear Elephant,

Seems we’re joined at the interplanetary hip this week. Sort of. Not sure I’d watch television if I only had four hours left…but on the other hand…what else is there? Good one.

    Live long and prosper,

    Rochelle

  34. If I had four hours, I’d have a cup of tea and a bubble bath. Most men I know, yeah, they’d have TEA I MEAN TEA!!! – go out with a bang and all that. Men!

    • Elephant has a family friendly blog here, Victoria! But while everyone is entitled to spend their last hours as they choose, they cannot necessarily discuss it here!
      Thanks and hugs
