Going Swimmingly – Friday Fictioneers

AnElephantCant wear fancy footwear
And he certainly can’t wear big boots
He has quite big toes
Though not as big as his nose
And he has really ginormously big foots

Once again it is Friday Fictioneer time.
Where svelte-shoed Rochelle hosts footwear fanatics from all over the world.
And some men.
And ABarefootedElephant.
The idea is to write a very short story, circa 100 words, based on this picture prompt (below).
That’s it.

Going Swimmingly

She arrives home to see the dog, nervous, at the poolside.
She wanders across, more curious than concerned.
He is floating face down, unmoving.
Dropping the groceries she takes quick steps and leaps to his rescue.

He is floating face down, unmoving.
He loves to lie still, listening to the rhythm of his heart.
Occasionally he moves his arms very slowly, very gently.
His shadow and the reflection of the ripples remind him of Da Vinci’s Universal Man.
He is at peace.

He sees a shadow and turns his head.
Her boot catches him on the temple, killing him instantly.

About ceayr

A Scot who has discovered peace in a small town he calls Medville on the Côte Vermeille, C.E. Ayr has spent a large part of his life in the West of Scotland and a large part elsewhere. His first job was selling programmes at his local football club and he has since tried 73 other career paths, the longest being in IT, with varying degrees of success. He is somewhat nomadic, fairly irresponsible and, according to his darling daughter, a bit random. So, nobody’s perfect.
