Rock n Roll

Even at a rock festival, this is unusual.
The entire park is flooded with bright light from the night sky.
And, floating maybe 100 feet above the field, is what appears to be a space ship.
Some people cheer, thinking it is part of the show.
Some flee in panic.
And some just think ‘Wow, too cool, man’.
Those who have fled find that they are imprisoned by an impassable invisible barrier, which surrounds the whole area.
A flat, metallic voice emanates from the ship.
Do. Not. Be. Afraid, it intones, We. Are. Absorbing. Your. Culture.
Some people cheer, some flee, and some, y’know…
Strange quivering beams, of indeterminate colour, radiate from the hovering vessel.
They focus briefly on each individual, before moving quickly on to the next.
After only a few minutes of utter confusion, the voice speaks again.
It is now softer, more human.
Okay, it says, we can now speak your language, and morph into your shapes.
Please don’t panic.
A tall, elegant dude, in an amazing fluorescent suit and ultra-hip shades, emerges from a previously unseen doorway in the craft.
He looks down, like an emperor surveying the gladiatorial arena.
Then he turns towards the silent, open-mouthed band on the stage.
Okay, guys, he says, clicking his fingers, let’s rock ‘n’ roll!

About ceayr

A Scot who has discovered peace in a small town he calls Medville on the Côte Vermeille, C.E. Ayr has spent a large part of his life in the West of Scotland and a large part elsewhere. His first job was selling programmes at his local football club and he has since tried 73 other career paths, the longest being in IT, with varying degrees of success. He is somewhat nomadic, fairly irresponsible and, according to his darling daughter, a bit random. So, nobody’s perfect.

    Fun post!

While the memories of such times are at hand all too readily, I will refrain from doing the math.
Nostalgia is to accurate memory as a vampire to the morning sun… better to not mix the two.

Been to a concert or two?
Liked Nancy’s line about Who we did not see.

    My first concert?
On a hockey rink, which for the day, would have been one of the larger available venues, not counting a traditional concert hall. That was not an option)

Still remember feeling the cold of the ice through the plywood that served as temporary flooring.
the seating? glad you asked! wooden folding chairs! the kind I last had the capability of being comfortable sitting in many, many years ago.

( the concert bill? Cactus, Cat Stevens and the All-Night Newsboys and Jimi Hendrix)

“Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around

    Just like yesterday
Then I’ll get on my knees and pray
    We don’t get fooled again”

What a fabulous word video you’ve created.
I can see it, smell it and hear it – even without your reading, which, by the way, is so good – it’s all there.
I have nostalgia for the nostalgia.
And Phil’s dude is exactly right.

  6. Lucifer in the sky with diamonds! I had no idea you were such a cool dudie!

Oh I think you had just such an idea!

So, old scribbler, are you going to add your tuppence worth here?
You know you want to, and even Rosey is welcome!

  7. Reads suspiciously like a memory of attending a Pink Floyd concert while under the influence of certain illicit substances. Wonderfully atmospheric and nostalgic. And a huge thank you for helping kickstart this writing jalopy. 🙂

It was actually Joe Cocker in an open air arena in Juan-les-Pins, right on the Med.
I can still smell the fresh sea breeze, or something…

My pleasure, the world always needs a better mousetrap.

      • Ah, the immortal Joe. I remember seeing him in Melbourne staggering between the amp boxes for refreshment strategically placed everywhere. One of the greatest concerts I’ve ever been to.

  8. Having been to more than my fair share of rock concerts back in the day, all I can say is “Wow! Too cool, man!” 😎

If they’re absorbing our culture then it won’t be too long before they’re cancelling everyone in sight. Good to read you again, CE.
