The Boat

High on the cliff face, lying in the long grass, I pay little attention at first to the boat slipping into the secluded inlet, although I do notice that it is of exceptional quality.
It is not huge by the standards of this coast but, unusually, it looks as though it is designed for speed rather than comfort or capacity.
Two men are on deck, carefully studying the sides of the calanque, but as I am almost invisible in my bird-watching gear, their eyes sweep past my location.
A third man appears and because, even from this distance, he looks vaguely familiar, I raise my binoculars to confirm his identity.
All three immediately turn their heads towards my position, leading me to assume that the sun has reflected off a lens.
As I adjust the focus, I see two rifles pointing straight at me.

  1. Scary! Well done!

  2. Sharp Six! Like how it builds from the perceived safety of the ‘bird watcher’ blending into the landscape and observing – then is undone by the reflection of the binoculars.
