Joan of Arc – Sunday Photo Fiction

Sunday Photo Fiction is a weekly challenge presented by Susan Spaulding, who has taken over this great weekly prompt from my old friend Al Forbes.
This week’s photo is again provided by myself, C. E. Ayr.
It shows Dumbarton Bridge crossing the River Leven, which runs from Loch Lomond to the River Clyde.
The general idea is to write a short story (200 word max) inspired by what you see in the picture (below).

Joan of Arc

I always hated the bitch.
She clearly thought she was better than us.
So supercilious, so condescending.
I never understood the expression ‘to look down one’s nose’ until I met her.
She deserved to die.
Her name was Joan Dark, so of course we came up with an amusing method of killing her.
We burned her at the stake.
Man, could she scream.
Not just foul words, but vile curses.
Which made us laugh even more.
Until things started to go wrong.
Little things at first, but annoying.
Then, only three weeks later, Danny hanged himself.
Seems he completely lost his mind.
Then Hughie walked off the bridge.
It is a long way down.
By that time he was practically a skeleton, a gibbering wreck.
That just leaves me.
The nightmares are awful, but when I waken her screams still fill my head.
So I put the pistol in my mouth.
And the screaming stops.
I hear her triumphal laughter.

About ceayr

A Scot who has discovered peace in a small town he calls Medville on the Côte Vermeille, C.E. Ayr has spent a large part of his life in the West of Scotland and a large part elsewhere. His first job was selling programmes at his local football club and he has since tried 73 other career paths, the longest being in IT, with varying degrees of success. He is somewhat nomadic, fairly irresponsible and, according to his darling daughter, a bit random. So, nobody’s perfect.

Karma is also a bitch. What goes around, comes around, so it seems. Nice story, C.E.

  4. Well, that story was a scream! My daughter lives by Loch Lomond so I’ve probably crossed that bridge a few times. Just thought I’d mention it!
