Sunday Photo Fiction is a weekly challenge presented by Susan Spaulding, who has taken over this great weekly prompt from my old friend Al Forbes.
This week’s verdant photo comes courtesy of pensitivity101, a charming lady and excellent writer.
The general idea is to write a short story (200 word max) inspired by what you see in the picture (below).

In the Soil
It’s all in the soil.
That’s what I say to everyone who asks.
And lots of folk do, especially my neighbours.
But we have the same soil, they say.
I smile and nod.
I love my garden.
It gives me such pleasure to tend my little herbaceous plants, prune my roses, cultivate my sunflowers.
And I get such joy from my prize-winning vegetables.
Envious losers at the garden fêtes wonder how I do it.
I tell them the same thing.
It’s all in the soil.
I find my garden gives me a purpose in life since my Rosie passed, nearly ten years ago now.
Although I often feel she is still here, keeping an eye on me, laughing at my silly jokes.
And sometimes tut-tutting at my little secret.
People often ask if I get lonely, why I don’t get a cat, or a puppy.
Pets come and go, I say.
I see signs up all the time, all over the neighbourhood.
Lost, please call…
But my marrows, well, they just keep getting bigger and better.
It’s all in the soil, of course.
Is your herb garden growing over Rosie? She is around you even after she is gone.

So very evil. I knew nee i know there’s always an devilish ending, a twist that discerning readers of yours have developed a taste for. Ceayr, fabulous writing, as usual. But then who’s complaining? Definitely not the soil, or what’s inside, yeah?
