The Leader
Ecstasy
They finish their ice creams – the high spot of their day – and head homewards through the park, their park.
It has been their haunt for six or more years now, since their young leader first learned to walk.
As always, they both carry sticks or, to be more precise, magic dragon secret mammoth multi-functional hydrosonic stick guns.
An explorer has to be prepared for every eventuality.
He is instructed to enter a gap in a thick clump of bushes, as the dynamic front man scouts round the side.
His old legs are beginning to creak after a long afternoon when his foot catches in a root and he is suddenly sprawling full length in a wreckage of branches and leaves.
He is badly winded and painfully aware of the excruciating damage to his left shin, which he suspects will result in a bruise the size of Oregon.
Embarrassed and hurt, he awaits the final humiliation of laughter.
A face appears through the branches.
It wears a look of concern, not amusement.
A hand reaches for his, helps him to his feet.
Are you all right, he is asked for the fourth or fifth time.
The words of the wise woman come back to him then.
She was right, of course, and he was wrong to doubt her.
