Beach Band

They practice each evening on the beach.
There are five of them, three guitars, keyboards and drums.
They run power leads from the nearby Sailing Club, and play to the blue sky and the sea.
There are no vocals except occasionally when a girl singer joins them.
She’s a pretty lady, and not a bad singer, on a par with the rest of the group.
But one instrument continually overpowers the others.
Okay, I can’t claim to be an expert in music, but the imbalance begins to irritate me.
Eventually it gets so bad that I no longer pause to listen.
Then, one day as I pass, they sound different.
More controlled, more together.
I stop, and see that there are only four of them.
I smile and move on.
Then I see a poster saying Missing, above the photo of a young man.
The next evening I walk down to the beach.
I speak to the four musicians, and ask about the one who’s no longer there.
They shrug, eyes worried.
No one knows anything, he just disappeared.
I laugh inside because, of course, I already know the answer to my question.
You’re much better now, I tell them. Get the girl back regularly, and you could go places.
Like I said, I can’t claim to be an expert in music, but I know what I like.
I really don’t like a drummer with an ego.
And I don’t like to be irritated.
So, y’know…

He is somewhat nomadic, fairly irresponsible and, according to his darling daughter, a bit random. So, nobody’s perfect.

  1. The sound of the young man banging on the drums reminds me of someone obnoxiously talking. They never make any sense, but nonsense.

I could listen to your storytelling over and over. Your voice is so relaxing! Great story! Thanks!
