The Doors

I remember the first fire I ever set.
Well, the first not-quite-legal one.
It was great.
Just a wee wooden hut, where folk keep their tools and their gardening stuff, over the back fence from my mum’s place.
I watched it from my bedroom window.
Magic!
I’m telling you, what a buzz you get seeing something like that, the flames, the dancing shadows, the reflections.
Aye, and knowing it’s all your own work.
After two or three more small time escapades I get more adventurous.
I go into buildings where the flats have storage cupboards on the stairs or landings.
When a door’s unlocked, I make a fire in there.
Then the fire engines come, lights flashing, sirens wailing, lots of big guys with red faces charging up and down stairs.
Fabulous.
So now, of course, I have to do the real thing.
I know this old couple, a pal’s grandparents, nice old folk, always got a chocolate digestive for you.
They live in a top flat, three floors up.
That’s got to be a hard pech for them with two or three bags of messages.
But perfect for me.
Tonight I pay a wee visit.
I take paraffin and matches and wire.
I pour the paraffin through the letter box, and light it.
Inside is an inferno in minutes.
The wire?
I tie it to their door handle, and to the handle of the flat opposite.
So they can’t open their doors from the inside.
Brilliant!

Oh dear. He’s ruthless. So that’s what it’s like to be inside the mind of a psychopathic arsonist – I always wondered. Horrific, but brilliantly portrayed.

  5. Sally's avatar Sally says:

Oh my! You do go evil!

  6. There goes your source of chocolate digestives, you silly boy. There’s always trouble when there’s arson about.

  7. Jesus, man! You don’t mess around!
I think my Arthur Brown vid stuck with you all week.
    This is killer ink!

    Jeez, that’s brutal.
But so well written. – and read.
You take us right inside the perpetrator’s sick head and make it all seem so logical.
    Brilliant.

An intriguing story as always. But no unicorn, I repeat. No unicorn would ever let this happen! 😉

  11. At least he is thorough in his work! A very good story.
