Le marché noir – Friday Fictioneers

Friday Fictioneers is hosted by the wonderful Rochelle, the undisputed master of what I call Sound Bite Fiction.
She sets the weekly challenge, the standard, and the prompt photo.
The idea, as always, is to write a story of around 100 words based on the picture below, which this week is supplied by the peripatetic pensmith, me.

Le marché noir

Portuguese Tony has fallen on hard times.
He always worked the black market, labouring on construction projects, getting cash-in-hand payments.
Along this coast they are always putting up new hotels and apartment blocks.
But, since he lost his driving licence, he struggles to find work.
He now lives down by the port, in what the French call a
camping-car.
He spends even more time in bars, listening and spreading gossip.
He has talked about the wrong people.
They run
le marché noir here.
I will have a word with him tonight, as he stumbles along the quayside.
Goodbye, old friend.

About ceayr

A Scot who has discovered peace in a small town he calls Medville on the Côte Vermeille, C.E. Ayr has spent a large part of his life in the West of Scotland and a large part elsewhere. His first job was selling programmes at his local football club and he has since tried 73 other career paths, the longest being in IT, with varying degrees of success. He is somewhat nomadic, fairly irresponsible and, according to his darling daughter, a bit random. So, nobody’s perfect.

  1. I felt a sense of doom about Tony from the first line. Sadly I never made his acquaintance, seems to be a popular guy.

He has made a few guest appearances on here to great acclaim.
I did not intend this, but sometimes, it seems, a character catches the imagination.
I feel as though I have created a monster, so I am not sure what my next move is.

  2. No, not Tony!

Has Portuguese Tony finally gone too far? He just couldn’t keep his mouth shut. Still, he seems to lead a somewhat charmed life, I bet this isn’t the last we see of him!
