Candy’s Kitchen

The front door is unlocked, so I step inside.
Are you there, Candy?
Kitchen, she replies. And shut the door, Roger’s dead.
Roger’s her husband.
Well, was, apparently.
I stand gazing open-mouthed round the blood-drenched kitchen.
I’m not really surprised that she murdered him, he was such an irritating wee turd.
I sigh and shake my head, lift my arms in a what-are-we-going-to-do-now sort of gesture.
Some mess, eh? Candy says, calm as ever.
I turn and see her smiling at me over her shoulder.
She’s at the sink, rinsing the carving-knife.
There’s wine in the fridge, she says.

  1. I liked this a lot. I liked how you used the ‘candy kitchen’ prompt and the story was extremely creepy and chilling. Now I’m trying to figure out who the fellow is who walked in the unlocked door: friend, lover, nosy next door neighbor, police officer?

      Glad you enjoyed, Michael.
First name terms, knows and dislikes husband, gets a smile and directions for wine…
I wrote her as a friend, but the reader has always the right to interpret differently!

Sinister and delightful, C.! The scene, and the wine, reveal much about the nature of their relationship. And I love the play on words with Candy as a woman’s name, and “kitchen” her response.

Hey! Congratulations on the Sunday Showcase!

  3. I love it! She’s feisty. I wonder if her friend the narrator will get a better ending though.

  5. Oh my. Somehow I feel like Candy will get away with this. Her calm is what makes it creepy.

Oh dear, I shouldn’t be laighing – but I am!
Great story, only 99 words that say so much about this marriage.

And Transatlantic Terror is a good heading for the stories in the podcast.
    They’re truly disturbing wee gems.
    Congratulations.
