Lottery

My friend Christophe is under the bizarre illusion that I am an all-powerful creator, that if I write something, then it will happen.
Because he knows that I write lots of weird stuff, and that lots of weird stuff happen in our universe, it’s his (obviously erroneous) conclusion that these two utterly unrelated happenings are in fact, somehow, connected.
I point out to him that if it were indeed that simple, then I would write myself into everlasting health, wealth and happiness, surrounded by an army of never-aging Isabelle Adjani lookalikes, instead of churning out an endless flow of never-going-to-be-published stories of varying lengths and styles, with nothing in common but their total lack of literary merit.
He ignores this as somehow flawed logic, and insists that he wants to win the lottery, carefully side-stepping my suggestion that the purchase of oodles of tickets would significantly improve his chances.
So I tell him I have finally relented, and written that he wins a zillion-dollar rollover (whatever that might be), omitting only the minor detail that in the last paragraph he gets struck by lightning as he dances happily to claim his good fortune.
And now, with a bag of his favourite grapes clutched sorrowfully in my non-writing hand, and a butterfly net, of course, I’m on my way to visit Christophe in hospital.

  1. Excellent reminder to make sure you’ve covered all contingencies when putting out the “wish” to the Universe!. At least Christophe did not succumb to the strike however, he knows who was responsible, lol

  2. Amusing, except to the unlucky lightening victim.

  3. Top shelf, mate. Although ‘an endless flow of never-going-to-be-published stories’ was a bit close to home for me. 🙂

Christophe should read the story to see what’s going to happen. When one isn’t sure where the logical problem lies, “somehow flawed logic” always works.

Fun (‘ceptin for poor Christophe) Six

*which always fascinated my younger iteration… the question I could never get an answer to was simply, “Why the cautionary tales if there was no such thing as (fill in the blank)”

What a delightful – and delightfully told – tale, with a suitable wicked twist at the end.
    I suppose I shouldn’t really be smiling…
    And the artwork is fabulous.
