The Mermaid
Did I ever tell you about the time I fell in love with a Mermaid?
I was abroad, in a strange city, crossing a bridge high above dark water, when I saw this stunning, exotic lady.
The thing is that when I’m out on my daily walk, regardless of where I am, I move at a fairly relaxed stroll, so as I approached her I had time to study her face, analyse her expression, and understand the wistful ache in her eyes as she gazed down at the waves far far below.
I stopped to talk and she told me her story, how she was a mermaid who longed to return to the sea but was afraid because of a terrible life with a violent husband.
I took her home with me and we fell in love and spent happy years together until I realised how much time she spent with Colin, the handsome young chap at the fishmonger’s.
The next time we were out for our daily walk, crossing a bridge high above dark water, I asked her about him and she laughed, and so, knowing she could swim, I just threw her off.
Note:
‘Colin’ in French means coalfish (UK) or pollock (USA).
Just my little joke.
Well that ended with a splash!!

Laughing.
I am surprised, Susan, that so many ladies here find it amusing that I lobbed my lover off a high bridge!

The females of the species are more deadly than the males. (KIPLING)
I think that explains it. 🤣

Excellent ‘sharp-angle close’ (aka twist at the end of the story). Did not see that one coming.

Wonderful! At the start I was thinking, ‘beware, mermaids’, and then you turned it around and that made me laugh. Bravo for bringing a smile to my face just after reading Denise’s scary Six 🙂

Thanks, Chris, glad you enjoyed.
I admit to having mixed feelings about Mermaids.
I have used them as hunters in the past, but also fell in love with one some years ago…

Well, I wasn’t expecting that ending, but it was a great twist!
At the beginning of your story, I was envisioning the Little Mermaid statue in Denmark. 🙂

Still smiling at this delightfully fantastic and dark tale.
The word ‘just’ in the last line!
But… She longed to return to the sea anyway. Hm.
Did he punish her or did he save her?

I think you can take it that the narrator was ‘just’ miffed!
