Global Warming – Friday Fictioneers

Friday Fictioneers is hosted by the wonderful Rochelle, the undisputed master of what I call Sound Bite Fiction.
She sets the weekly challenge, the standard, and the prompt photo.
The idea, as always, is to write a story of around 100 words based on the picture below, which this week is supplied by Alicia Jamtaas.

Global Warming

Is Global Warming real?
I’ve been giving this some thought recently.
Well, since I saw that giraffe on the beach.
Drowned.
If a giraffe gets drowned, I think to myself, what about other animals?
Lions, llamas, hyenas, hedgehogs?
Monkeys, unless the trees are very tall.
And I wonder if elephants can swim around using their trunks as snorkels.
Like wee submarines with periscopes, y’know?
I imagine a one-tree desert island crammed with elephants in sun-glasses and deck-chairs, all waiting for the last coconut to fall.
I don’t know where they get deck-chairs.
Or sun-glasses.
But I’m definitely against Global Warming.

Hilarious. I also believe in human-caused climate change and not just because Bill Nye the Science Guy says so. But he does help to remind me that science IS cool.

This is really funny because not kidding I just finished an email to a highly sexist (religious) cause explaining that i will no longer donate to them due to their repeated thank you for donating notes with gender-based honorifics despite asking them to stop a) wasting trees by sending paper notes and b) referring to me as Miss Anne Doucette because I am divorced and present as female. FYI, I am nonbinary, asexual and really don’t care for the most part.

Like you calling me Ms. I can feel it is meant it a totally different nonpatronizing way. Seriously, thank you for being you. I needed that right now. Keep writing your unique thoughts.

Hello Anne (is it okay if I call you Anne?)
I was brought up to be polite, which was the norm in Scotland way, way back then!
My mother has been dead for many many years now, but I would never offend her by being rude to a stranger.
I am pleased that my form of address made you feel a little better.
It is a painful commentary on our world when the sort of insensitivity you mention is sadly commonplace.
Remember the words of Dr Seuss: There is no one alive who is youer than you.
          Keep being you.

Climate change is here to stay. Neanderthal man tried to tell us but no one was listening. The Sahara was once a green and lush land until the climate shifted.
Now, if the Earth was flat then surely we would have the same climate across the world.
I like how you equate the animals with human behaviour, particularly the absurdity of a drowned Giraffe. You would expect it could keep its head above the rising water. So how did it drown? – Perhaps like its human counterparts, because its head was buried in the sand.

  7. A humorous tale, but why did the giraffe have to drown? =) Elephants snorkeling then lounging in deck-chairs on a one-tree desert island made me smile. Thanks for that, CE!

You’ve written a hilarious description of how one can argue from totally wrong premises and still finish up with the right answer! Highly entertaining, CE!

Elephants would need HUGE deckchairs – that might explain the lack of trees.

Interesting… verrrry interesting. Hast thou forgotten the promise behind the rainbow, perhaps???? Never again shall the entire world die by flood… fire, maybe, but not flood. Hard to say to people affected by floods, though. Great story. I can picture the ellies all decked out with a radio blasting a Jimmy Buffet song… 🙂 ❤

I heard about polar bears falling from the sky or was it chicken little saying the sky was falling. Whatever. Wonderful satire.

Well that was a reflective piece, and no-one died. Apart from the giraffe… I may not, however, forget the image of elephants snorkelling through the floods…

The giraffe catapulted the monkey on the longest tree, and the deck chairs came from branches provided by the monkey. He won’t step down, til he is sure the lions and his companions have all drowned.
