Five Six – Sunday Photo Fiction

Sunday Photo Fiction is a weekly challenge presented by Susan Spaulding, who has taken over this great weekly prompt from my old friend Al Forbes.
This week’s photo is once again provided by the lady herself.
The general idea is to write a short story (200 word max) inspired by what you see in the picture (below).

Five Six

One, Two, Buckle my shoe…
I don’t mind the night-shift.
Some of the guys don’t like it, but I find it quite enjoyable.
It is already dark when I get out of bed, no harsh sunlight to hurt the eyes.
I dress carefully, my uniform is immaculately pressed, and my boots polished to a reflective gleam.
I like to look the part.
And the streets are quiet, no traffic problems.
Three, Four, Knock at the door…
We don’t know where we are going until just before we leave.
It doesn’t matter.
It’s just a job, we don’t ask questions.
We go where we’re sent, do what we’re told.
And we don’t actually knock at the door.
I kick it in.
Five, Six, Pick up sticks…
Again, they’re not really sticks.
We call them batons, others say they are cudgels.
What’s in a name, right?
We use them to subdue anyone who gets in our way.
And he – it is almost always a man – gets a severe thrashing, before we take him back for questioning.
Seven, Eight, Lay them straight…
Answers?
I don’t know, that is not my business.
My task is over when I lay them at my boss’s feet.
