Rainbow
We sit on the rocks at the end of Medville’s forbidden jetty.
Hand in hand we gaze across the bay at the rainbow.
It emerges from the Mediterranean just off the tip of Cap Lardier and curves north-west over the hills before descending into the heavy cloud cover.
I am at peace with myself, with her, and with our surroundings.
The blustery wind adds to the waves’ spectacle, and the light rain does not concern me at all.
‘It is beautiful,’ I say, a nod of my head indicating the rainbow, ‘the way it rises from the water like that.’
She regards me with a strange smile.
I utterly adore this wonderfully creative, but somewhat otherworldly, woman.
‘What,’ I ask, ‘don’t you think so?’
‘Of course,’ she answers, ‘but do you not see that there is more?’
‘More? More what?’ I am baffled.
‘A rainbow is also functional,’ she murmurs, looking up into my eyes.
‘The rainbow has a function?’ I am confused, feeling, not for the first time, that she has knowledge far beyond my comprehension.
‘Of course,’ she laughs, but she is serious, ‘how else can mermaids dance with angels?’

well, now here’s a new story!
wow, I’m not sure I’ve read this correctly C.E. …. where is the gore, the ripping underbelly dark current??

great job of it – and yes, there is a particularly “otherworldly” feel to this – a slight hint that indeed, the “treasured companion” is a wise one, with a scope and grasp tantalizingly just beyond one’s comprehension.
