Hallowe’en
I love Hallowe’en.
This is probably the last year we will be able to really enjoy it, which is sad.
But it is for kids, and we are getting too old.
We go round the neighbourhood, guising, as we call it in Scotland.
You probably know it as Trick or Treat.
We know our town well, of course, so we know the best places to visit, for maximum reward.
In the posh suburbs there are wealthy, lonely, old folk.
We visit them and, for a short time, brighten their lives.
We do it properly, full costumes, scary masks.
We each do a party piece.
Ron is a vampire, he recites a poem about ‘some despotic hooded God whose benediction is the humid blood he lusts to taste’.
Hmm, okay.
Jim is a zombie, sings a song called The Monster Mash for some light relief.
Jeanie is a witch, she performs the Witches’ scene from Macbeth.
She is brilliant!
I am dressed as a werewolf.
I warble the Werewolf Song.
And when I get to the part ‘the werewolf he is somebody just like you and me’, I pause.
And I take off my mask.
Man, can those old dearies scream!

Haha! Love the description of all your guisers and that ending, C – made me smile to think of the poor old dears choking on their false teeth, being faced with the real thing! Fun that. And thanks for the link to the song – I had never heard it, but really liked it.
