Sunday Photo Fiction is a weekly challenge presented by my old friend Al Forbes.
The idea is to write a short story (200 word max) inspired by what you see in his picture (below).
I am rather pressed for time again this week, so I am recycling a piece I wrote two winters ago for this same challenge.
I quite like it.

The Snowman
It is pretty cool being a snowman.
I have a great nose, which makes me wonder why the whole world smells like carrot.
Just kidding.
I have eyes of coal, and a row of pebbles for a mouth.
They are arranged to give me a smile, which is good, because I am happy.
I wear a silly hat and a football scarf.
Barcelona, it says, which is strange since I am in Scotland.
Go figure.
The children made me, and they love me.
The little girl hugs me each night before she goes to bed, and every morning when she wakens.
That is the down side.
I am starting to melt.
She is inconsolable.
She begs me to stay but, of course, I cannot.
I am sad to leave her too.
And I cannot tell her the truth.
I am turning to water.
For me the adventure is just beginning.
As playful and optimistic as you would expect a snowman to be! I really love that his melting is Not the end but the next part of the adventure 😃

Interesting version of Frosty the Snowman from the Snowman’s POV. I like it 🙂 Hugs CE

Great ending twist, C.E. Since water travels the world over I guess that is a type of adventure. Good writing. 🙂 — Suzanne

Such a lovely tale, now wonder you ‘quite like it’, I quite liked it myself 🙂 Loved that you didn’t end on a sad or poignant note but hinted at loads of fun in the next stage of his life, after all, that is what snowmen are for, right? 🙂

Very humorous line about the carrot nose. I really liked the last line about the adventure just beginning. It could have ended on a sad note, but that line really changed the mood.
I can relate to running short on time. It must be the season and all the end-of-the-year wrap up that makes time seem so sparse lately.

I like how the tone changes from playful to an existential crisis.

Hugging a snowman is not a good idea if you want it to stick around. Although even if you don’t, it’s going to melt eventually. Hm, important life lesson? I’m glad for the happy twist at the end.

There are a lot of Barca scarfs and jerseys in Scotland, and I imagine everywhere else. Globalisation at the sporting level. If the story is a couple of years old, I wonder where the snowman is now…
