The Cupboard – Friday Fictioneers

Friday Fictioneers is hosted by the wonderful Rochelle, the undisputed master of what I call Sound Bite Fiction.
She sets the weekly challenge, and the standard.
And this week she provides the photo too, a typically cheerful clutter in a typical family cupboard.
The idea, as always, is to write a story of around 100 words based on this picture, below.

The Cupboard

I am alone.
I feel very grown-up.
Mummy had to go out, just for a few minutes.
It’s the first time I’ve been in charge.
I’m not frightened.
Well, not very.
Because I hear a noise in the cupboard.
Maybe it’s a spider.
No, spiders don’t make loud rustling noises.
Maybe it’s a mouse.
No, mice don’t move things.
Maybe it’s a rat.
Yes, it must be.
Rats are strong.
They can rustle,
and shove things aside, can’t they?
But I’m pretty sure there’s one thing they can’t do.
Because they don’t have hands.
So why is the handle turning?

  1. Oh, no, the moving handle. It sounds like the creature that’s found under beds at night. Either that or it’s a neighbor child who snuck in and is trying to scare him. Good writing, C.E. It reminds me of the old TV series “The Twilight Zone”. 🙂 — Suzanne

Well, that can’t be good. I just read a real account of a couple of kids who were left home alone. They were wrestling on their parents’ bed when one fell off and knocked into a bookcase opening a hidden passageway. When they went in to investigate it, they found a small storage area and someone had been staying inside. They found a sleeping bag and snacks. They even found a banana peel that was still yellow. The only way into the storage area was through the bookcase. That story creeped me out a bit, and I just had chills with your story. I’m going to have to go through my house now and make sure I don’t have any hidden passages…especially in the closets.

Perhaps it’s some of the food turning bad. When potatoes go rotten, it’s trouble for everyone. And I’ve seen cheese so moldy, I swear it grew arms.

  9. I love how this is written in a child’s voice. Closets are were those things that go bump in the night sleep. My oldest daughter to this day won’t go to sleep in her bedroom until she is sure the closet door is closed.

Well, I knew when you presented us with a child alone things would end badly and you didn’t disappoint me! You devilish man, torturing that poor kid. But what is in the cupboard? And what will our little adventurer do about it? Wonderfully creepy tale,C

  19. Dear C.E.

Now that’s taking ‘things that go bump in the night’ to a new level. Every child’s nightmare. And my closets are scary enough as you can see. 😉 Good one.

I shall tell myself that the rat is swinging on the door handle. I shall also tell myself that the rat is not quite strong enough to push the door open. I shall keep repeating this until his Mummy comes home. Spooky or what.
