Dead – Sunday Photo Fiction

Sunday Photo Fiction is a weekly challenge presented by my old friend Al Forbes.
The idea is to write a short story (200 word max) inspired by what you see in the picture (below).
This week’s
cool prompt is supplied by Kathryn Forbes, perhaps a relative of our exalted host.
I went to a predictably dark place.

Dead

I am bored.
It is really dull being dead.
I am stuck inside this sacrof, safroca, em, coffin, a big stone thing, not a lot of room to move about.
Did I not tell everyone when I was alive that I was claustrophobic, yet they still just bung me into this wretched box?
And I am not allowed out, that is one of the rules.
There are lots of rules when you are dead, I bet you didn’t know that.
Like, for instance, I can’t tell anyone about what happens when you die, about the light and the tunnel and the clouds and everything, none of that stuff.
And I can’t just nip out for a bit of haunting, there’s a few folk I could cheerfully scare into a change of undergarments, I can tell you!
Not even just a wee look round, maybe pop in on the pretty girl next tomb down, might be nice.
But no, stay put until you are told, or else.
I can’t tell you what or else means, that’s against the rules too, but it sounds quite hellish.
Ah well, I better just relax.
At least it will soon be Hallowe’en.

  1. I enjoyed that. Halloween certainly sounds like it could be a spot of spooky fun for them.

So he gets to go out each Halloween? I once wrote a small story like that, but it was about a person who was horribly disfigured. On Halloween, people just assumed it was a mask.

That was quite a humorous piece for being so dark. I have to say, I’d rather enjoy hearing more of this story. I’m sad it’s over.

  6. Hmmm, pretty girl tomb. Are you sure she wouldn’t be worth a little bit of peril?

I like this. Many of us are bored of being dead, and do something just to feel alive.

  8. I’m intrigued as to how you know so much about being dead – is there something you haven’t told us?

Nice to read from the point of view of a dead person.

  10. Good story as always. It would be sad to shame if you had to lie in the same place for an entire year at a time. Mind you, it would make Halloween a lot of fun!

Darn! I suppose I’ll have to finish all my acts of revenge while I’m alive. And I was so looking forward to a posthumous career as a vengeful poltergeist. Good story CE.
