Nightfall

nightfall

I often wonder through the day
where you go when you get that call
I never ask and you don’t say
I only hope you’re here before nightfall

I’ve loved you from the day we met
it was not just my heart you stole
you took my peace of mind and soul and yet
I hope you’ll return before nightfall

I have no desire to tie you down
pinned like a butterfly to a sad dank wall
you are always free to move around
but I hope you’re back before nightfall

because when you’re not here I worry
I want to know you’re safe that’s all
you don’t need to even hurry
but please come home before nightfall

my life is strangely void without you
I feel that I’m much less than whole
I don’t resent the pain you put me through
I want my arms around you come nightfall

  1. Curiously, I at first mistook you for speaking to God, with “nightfall” being a metaphor for the end of life. I’m glad it didn’t turn out that way. Much better as a father’s concern for his child.

I love this one a lot. Has the feeling of a 1970/1980’s rock ballad. Your words are really catchy and agree with Sascha who said this ballad was “haunting.” It definantly has that feeling along with a perfectly reasonable wish for the speaker to have the person he loves with him at night, like she’s his home and he doesn’t feel happy or right when she’s not home. At they’re able to share there Day time adventure and just be together and he’s very happy for her to live her own daily life and be free, as long at night they’re together.. Awesome job on this!
    Hugs again!

The butterfly line works so well because I really picture this woman as flitting in an out of his life while he enjoys her beauty. And there’s the sadness of whether she loves him. So many lovely lines from the “peace of mind and soul” to the “pinned like a butterfly,” and “I feel that I’m much less than whole.” It was all lovely, but I can’t help but pull some of my favorite lines whenever I read a poem.

Beautiful melody to this poem, C.E.
The gentle words of the lover under the building anguish tell volumes.
As only good poets know how.
