Sunday Photo Fiction is a weekly challenge presented by my old friend Al Forbes.
The idea is to write a short story (200 word max) inspired by what you see in the picture (below).
This week Al provides us with a slightly bizarre photo, which made me think of a great Marvyn Gaye song, Wherever I Lay My Head.
Or it might be Hat.

The Head
There is a head on a shelf.
The youngsters jump, squealing and shrieking.
Amanda and Angie grab each other, wide-eyed in fright.
Calm down, says Al, always the brave one, it’s just a head.
It looks almost human, muses Joy, I wonder who put it there?
It hasn’t been there very long, suggests Neel thoughtfully, there isn’t much dust around it.
We should examine it, says Al, the oldest, and clearly the leader.
Um, hold on, says Amanda, let’s not be hasty. What would Scooby Doo do?
Doo do, says Joy, and they all laugh, but nervously.
Come on, says Neel, moving towards Al.
Together they approach the strange object.
The girls crowd behind them, less afraid of an unattached head than of being teased by their friends.
They are within touching distance now.
Is it real, asks Angie, uncertainly.
Al reaches out a hand, his finger brushes the nose.
Boo, says the head.
In the hysterical scramble for the door, Amanda’s Canadian ice hockey pedigree shows.
Elbows flashing, she is first to escape.
The others fall over, scramble up and out.
I pull my head out of the hole and walk round the shelves.
Man, this place smells bad.
Great story CE & very funny to use us all in your story. Yes you are right I would be terrified about the head. I don’t know about the Scooby Doo line but there was a Scooby Doo series on Saturday mornings called ‘Scooby Doo and the Thirteen Ghosts’ which was very entertainng for my brothers and I aroun 10 or 12 years old.
Very funny you playing the head CE, and tthe head that would freak me out indeed.Ashamedly I do not skate despite being a hockey fanatic but I do know how to use my elbows and fight if I must; the jersey pull over the head works every time but many of these skills have been learned from basketball in junior high and high school. If you’ve ever seen senior high or even university basketball, girls basketball, is much more vicious then men’s.
Pulling hair, scratching with long nails left long, earrings being pulled out (though they should’ve been removed and much use of elbows, shoving and whatever else. Useful a time or two in the bar, but nothing too bad 🙂
Thanks for including me in your story and Hugs to you as always CE. You too Al as you were so afraid!

Oh Amanda, and I told Al you are a sweetheart! You seem to be a cross between the Tasmanian Devil and the Terminator! Don’t you ever just sit quietly and crochet or something? Hugs, but please be careful with me, I am ancient!

Crochet lol. I sit quiet to read or write. I’m not a crocheter though. Painting and drawing if I’m in the mood 🙂 Cheers and thanks again!

Haha I loved that. Not sure if Mandi would have been the first out of the door, or if I would have scooby-dood before her. Great story. Made me laugh

What a laugh riot of a story. Laughing my guts out though am unsure how others of the SPF firmament feel about this utterly delectable tale. Well written Ceayr, and with your usual wry sense of humour.
