Sunday Photo Fiction is a weekly challenge presented by my old friend Al Forbes.
The idea is to write a short story (200 word max) inspired by what you see in his picture (below).
My first thought today when I saw Al’s creepy image was to go back to bed.
And hide under the covers until the bad thing went away.

Nice and Kneesy
Breaking a bone is a funny thing.
Some are really painful, like a shin.
And such a hassle to heal again, splints, plaster, crutches, a real nuisance.
The radius, in your forearm, not so much, a bit sore then an inconvenience.
Toes too are a major pain, got to watch your footwear, make sure you don’t kick anything.
Or anyone!
Fingers, it depends how.
If they are bent back till they snap, ouch!
Collar bones are designed to break, like a trip switch, nature’s way of protecting your neck.
But worst of all is the kneecap.
Absolute agony, probably an operation, and a whole load of time to recuperate.
Yes, I have broken a few of them.
No, not my own, of course!
How mean! Last line gives a real punch. You build it so beautifully. Very naughty, expressive mind.

Great last line, E.C. According to your usual story, those who came out of a scrap just broken and bruised were the lucky ones. Well written. 😀 — Suzanne

Lovely poem. Yet a bit, um scary at the end when he talks about breaking kneecaps. Seems like has a career as an assassin or mobster of some kind.

Hi, Mandibelle, you should have sussed by now that I can be a tad on the brutal side.
But no one got killed this week, so that is a plus!

Haha. Not at all. I’m as imperfect as the next person. But thank you for the compliment. 😀

last line – LOVE that last line. Others said, “sinister” in comments. I think that works 😉

Ouch. I despise dealing with broken bones. Feeling those bone edges grate against each other under your hands trying to put them back together. I shuttered at your prose today but then again I like a good shutter.

Um, Tracey, erm, thanks, but you realise that your comment is much more graphic and disturbing than my story?
I think we are all shuddering now!

Oops, remind me to never invite you to dinner at my house especially if my vet tech and surgeon sons are home. We take no prisoners in our graphic discussions. I really do hate broken bones though. But I like it when you make me shutter.

“Scars have the power to remind us the past is real,” said Cormac McCarthy. I’ve only broken a finger, and I remember it whenever I look at my right hand. Nicely done.

Dear CE,
Oh, that was painful. I can relate to the broken toes…two in one summer two years ago. The last line made me laugh out loud and your title is brilliant.

Re title, I love bad puns!

As a matter of fact I’ve been told my sense of humor is very warped. As for puns. My favorite are the hot crossed ones. 😉
