Festival – Sunday Photo Fiction

Sunday Photo Fiction is a weekly challenge presented by my old friend Al Forbes.
The idea is to write a short story (200 word max) inspired by what you see in his picture (below).
I absolutely love this photo, so have no plausible excuse for a story that just got out of hand.
Well, apart from the drugs, of course.

Festival

Even at a rock festival, this is unusual.
The entire area is flooded with bright light from above.
And, floating maybe 100 feet over the field, is a space ship.
Some people cheer, thinking it is part of the show.
Some flee in panic.
And some just think ‘Wow, cool’.
Those who have fled find that they are imprisoned by an impassable invisible barrier, which surrounds the whole area.
A flat, metallic voice emanates from the ship.
Do.Not.Be.Afraid, it intones, We.Are.Absorbing.Your.Culture.
Strange quivering beams, of indeterminate colour, radiate from the hovering vessel.
They focus briefly on each individual, then move quickly on to the next.
After only a few minutes of utter confusion, the voice speaks again.
It is now softer, more human.
Okay, it says, we can now speak your language, and morph into your shapes.
Please do not panic.
A tall, elegant dude, in an amazing fluorescent suit and ultra-hip shades, emerges from an unseen doorway.
He looks around, like an emperor surveying the gladiatorial arena.
He turns towards the silent, open-mouthed band on the stage.
Okay, guys, he says, let’s rock ‘n’ roll!

Very otherworldly story! I enjoyed this and how you did not take it down the path of death and destruction.

Hahahahan great take on the prompt! I thought first he was literally absorbing them into his space ship. I love your idea of them absorbing the culture to be a part of us! 🙂

  3. Brilliant. I was expecting them to kill everyone there. Love how you turned it around. Wonder if it was a spaceship, or if it was everyone’s drug induced state to make them think it was one 🙂
