Sunday Photo Fiction is a weekly challenge presented by my old friend Al Forbes.
The idea is to write a short story (200 word max) inspired by what you see in his picture (below).
This week’s excellent photo sends me wandering into all sorts of sun-dappled and moonlit places, full of light and happiness.

The Shadows
Mummy, the shadows on my blinds are scaring me.
Don’t be silly, sweetheart, that is your favourite tree.
Why is it moving so much?
It is only the wind, darling, nothing to worry about.
That looks like a man, a big scary nasty man!
No, honey, it is just the strong branch your swing hangs from.
It looks different at night, mummy.
I know, baby, tomorrow we will go out and tell your tree to behave, okay?
Silly mummy!
Goodnight, sweetheart.
Goodnight, mummy.
The man crawls along the branch, clenching his axe in his teeth.
We’ve all seen that shadow!

Extremely frightening at the end Caeyr. You build the tension in the story well. Especially well because I had a very similar situation to this little boy when my MOm was away for awhile, and came home from her vacation. I’m glad there was no man with an ax then.

Gritty and creepy at the end. You are definitely the master when it comes to telling these sorts of tales. Enjoyable read as always.
