Sunday Photo Fiction is a weekly challenge presented by my old friend Al Forbes.
The idea is to write a short story (200 word max) inspired by what you see in his picture (below).
This week’s delightful photo makes me think of beautiful autumn days, when the world is a wonderful place.

Blackberries
I love blackberries.
And Kirk and the girls just love the blackberry jam I make.
But they are so small this year.
Too dry, I think, we have not had enough rain this summer.
So when I am picking some today, rather poor specimens, I suddenly get quite excited.
I see this towering oak tree in a field, with blackberry bushes all around it.
And they look laden with fruit.
I forget I am a lady, clamber over the fence, and rush to my bounty.
Sure enough, the blackberries are huge, juicy and so sweet.
I eat as many as I put in my bag, they are so good.
At first I ignore the little prickles on my skin, thinking it is heat rash.
But then I see my arms and legs are covered in mosquitoes.
And I feel them on my face.
The swelling starts very quickly.
The bumps are already bigger than the blackberries.
And growing fast.
Mosquitoes seem to love me. I found this quite horrifying.

I liked your surprise ending. At first I thought she was going to be allergic to the berries. Mosquitos are horrible. Good job. 🙂

Ouch. No vitamin C here. Tag as Scottish noir.

I could so understand her glee at finding the big and juicy ones. Guess there is a price to pay for “stealing”…
Good story indeed!

Reminds me of my Mum running through the field to get to the fruit! Nice twist at the end.

Your mum was fast, but not as fast as Graham’s.
She got the best of the fruit, as I recall.

Ahhh, yes. I know this experience well …. evil little bloodsuckers.

Surely not evil, Joanne, just doing what they do.
Even if in this case the outcome is potentially fatal.

AnElephantCant resist any type of berries
Big juicy fruity ones just fill him with awe
He doesn’t care about colour
Green blue red or duller
He is quite happy if they are goose lingon or straw

Dear CE,
This left me itching. I’m running for the calamine but not before I tell you it’s a good story with a surprise ending.
Shalom,
Rochelle

Thanks, Rochelle, glad you enjoyed.
But not sure calamine will solve her problems.
