Rent a What? – Haibun Thinking

AnElephantCant tell you how happy he is
For some months now he has felt a sad lack
But once more quite merrily
He channels his creative energy
Into the Haibun good ol’ Al now brings back

AnElephant once again attempts to make some sort of sense of this great weekly challenge hosted by his friend Al.
And he again thanks Al for his superb efforts with this site.
Please take a moment to check out this page to see some superb interpretations of the Japanese Haibun, a literary form which explores the relationship between the human experience and nature.

This week he chooses this quote as his inspiration:
“You came here in that thing?
You’re braver than I thought.”
~ Carrie Fisher (Star Wars)

You want to rent a what?

A few months ago he finds himself once again on the brink of homelessness.
The French system of house letting, coupled with the extortionate summer charges due to the influx of visitors, make apartment hunting an interesting experience.
However, with the indispensable assistance of his great friend Emmy, he is finally offered a place with an outstanding panoramic view, just outside of town.
Actually just over a mile outside of town and, at least in one direction, homeward, very uphill.
He has no car; has seldom, until this time, had need for one.
And he has rented from the redoubtable Mad Betty as necessary.
But that is another story.
So he makes enquiries about suitable modes of transport, motos, scooters and, his favoured choice, to the bewilderment of his acquaintances, a unicorn.
His reasoning is that he will not need ‘L’ plates or insurance, and the cost of fuel will be negligible.
They eat grass, don’t they, so just the occasional sugar lump, perhaps?
Some of them are already questioning his sanity as his deadpan proposal for travelling to this year’s Football World Cup in Brazil was a submarine with a sun deck.
I need three crew members, he confirms.
A cook.
Someone to shovel the coal into the furnace.
And, most importantly, someone to serve cool drinks while he catches the rays.
Navigation is no problem.
Just hang a left at Gibraltar, he tells them, you can’t miss it.
It is huge!

to the open mind
all problems can be solved
with a sprinkle of humour

Great take on the prompt! And I like the picture too.
I can still see the bewildered looks as you calmy explained the submarine… and the view from up the hill. Good thing you did not find a unicorn!
