The Field – Friday Fictioneers

AnElephantCant drive a tractor
And he can’t live in an elegant chateau
But he does like to feel
He can pop into la ville
And treat himself to a slice of gateau

Once again it is Friday Fictioneer time.
Where our green-fingered hostess Rochelle sows a new idea each week and cultivates a crop of cleverly created chronicles.
And AnElephant ploughs pointlessly on as usual.
The idea is to write a very short story, circa 100 words, based on this picture prompt (below).
That’s it.

The Field

Oh, Mummy, we have had a wonderful day in the corn field.
We played tag, leap-frog and chase.
We ate that lovely salad with fresh bread for lunch, it was sooo good!
After that we played hide-and-seek, took us ages to find Al and of course we couldn’t find little Anja anywhere!
But she always gets bored and just comes home herself, doesn’t she?
Then that big combination thingy machine came and chomped up the whole field so we had to run away quickly.
And guess what, Mummy, sooo funny, it looked like Anja’s hat in one of the bales!

This has such a lovely innocent voice, and such a cruel twist. Well done.

  2. mm.. a little bit scary for poor Anja (and just as scary for mummy!) I thought elephants ate current buns not gateau so you must be a post elephant?

    • Ah well, it is probably time Anja got chopped into mincemeat.
And if you follow AnElephant’s deranged scribblings you are aware he eats peanuts, olives, croissants and pretty much anything else he can get his trunk on.
Thank you for visiting, dear lady.

Oh no, poor, sweet Anja 😦 Please tell me that it was just the hat that met the chopper blades 😦

Poor girl. I think I have no heart for frightening tales. Why an elephant made it happy.

  7. OhmyGod, at first I thought it was an innocent story, a sweet narration of a little girl’s day in the fields, playing with her siblings and then the breath just whooshed out of me in the last two lines! Amazing this is 😀

I’ve been reading a lot of Friday Fictioneer submissions and, I have to say, I adore a good macabre twist! Yours was a decent shock, and it kind of made me smile. (I feel so twisted for saying that, but it’s true!) Stuff like this tickles my fancy for the dark and not-so-friendly.

Oh, dear! Sad ending but a great voice. You maintained that childlike wonderment throughout the tale. Nicely handled. This is one of my faves so far this week.

    Cheers!

Sorry darling, but Rochelle got you there. However, this was one of your best poetic intros ever. Loved it. (and the story, of course.)

Isn’t it great what children see but don’t really see? You captured that nicely.

Poor Anja. A clear case of statutory reap. Well done.

EEEEP! What makes this terrifying is the way you captured the tone of the child. Of course I laughed inside first before I let the panic creep up.

  17. Oh, no! I have a bad feeling about this. I hope it’s just her hat, but suspect otherwise. Excellent story, but ewwwww. Please pass me a slice of gateau so I feel better.

Whoops. That made me laugh so hard. Poor Anja. As Adam said, she may have lost her hat in the field. I always love it when you include friends in your story, and wondering which one will buy the farm (pun intended)

Poor, Anja. Of course she could have just lost her hat in the field. Only time will tell I suppose.

  24. Well-done story but really, really frightening. Our children were young when we lived near a corn field years ago and I worried about it. It’s easy to get lost in one, especially for a young child.
